Railway Operations Training Courses – Under Construction


This course will provide the candidate with the knowledge required to carry out the duties of a Ground Shunter in a Construction Railway environment and includes an understanding of the rules appertaining to a construction railway.

The course covers the following:-

  • Roles and responsibilities of a Ground Shunter;
  • Driver and Shunter communication;
  • Basic track layout;
  • Types of wagon and their configuration;
  • Loading and unloading of wagons;
  • Load characteristics;
  • Basic marshalling movement & preparation of wagons & use of handbrakes on the Trace.


This course will provide the candidate with the knowledge required to carry out the duties of a Rail Movements Controller in a Construction Railway environment and includes an understanding of the rules appertaining to a construction railway.

The course covers the following:-

  • Railhead Layout;
  • Maintenance Depot Layout;
  • Trace Layout;
  • Phonetic alphabet;
  • Telephone communications;
  • Radio communications;
  • Types of rolling stock;
  • Configurations;
  • Loading and unloading;
  • CCRRB;
  • Traction current;              
  • Contingency arrangements;
  • Schedule production;
  • Train readiness for departure;    
  • Dealing with breakdowns;
  • Rules for emergency arrangements;
  • Dealing with minor incidents;
  • Dealing with major incidents.


This course will provide the candidate with the knowledge required to carry out the duties of a Train Driver in a Construction Railway environment and includes an understanding of the rules appertaining to a construction railway.

This course is an extension to the Ground Shunter and Train Driver courses and provides the candidate with the knowledge required to navigate the route(s) within a Construction Railway in a safe and effective manner.
